How to Boot Fedora From USB

Fedora is a free, open-source Linux distribution backed by Red Hat. Fedora Linux provides ISO images for download, which are usually burnt to a CD or DVD. However, Fedora Linux can also boot from a USB flash drive. Fedora includes a "LiveUSB Creator" application that runs on Fedora or Windows that automatically downloads the latest Fedora ISO, converts it to run on a USB drive and copies it to a USB drive plugged into your computer. Booting Fedora from USB is particularly useful for computers that don't have CD drives.

 Instructions

  1. Download and install the LiveUSB Creator application. On Fedora, open a Terminal by clicking "Applications," "System Tools" and "Terminal," type "su -c 'yum install liveusb-creator'" into the Terminal window, press "Enter," type your root password and press "Enter." On Windows, download the installer from the LiveUSB Creator webpage (see Resources), double-click the downloaded exe file and click "Install."
  2. Plug a USB flash drive into one of your computer's USB slots.
  3. Open LiveUSB Creator. On Fedora, click "Applications," "System Tools" and "LiveUSB-Creator." On Windows, click "Start," "All Programs," "LiveUSB Creator" and "LiveUSB Creator."
  4. Select your desired version of Fedora by clicking the box under "Download Fedora" in the Fedora LiveUSB Creator window. The latest, 32-bit version of Fedora is selected by default.
  5. Add persistent storage to your Fedora USB drive by clicking the slider under "Persistent Storage" and dragging it to the right, if desired. By default, all files created on a Fedora USB system are temporary until the computer shuts down. Persistent storage takes up extra space on the drive and lets you keep files on the Fedora USB system, making it a portable, customizable Fedora installation.
  6. Download the Fedora operating system image and copy it to your USB drive by clicking the "Create Live USB" button at the bottom of the window.
  7. Restart your computer with the Fedora USB drive plugged into it.
