Pidgin 2.6.1 is Out With Voice and Video Support!

Pidgin developers gave a promise to develop voice and video support for Pidgin since 2005 (a.k.a Gaim). Pidgin 2.6 is out now with voice and video support (Navigate to Pidgin changelog). Today we are going to install Pidgin 2.6.1 from Launchpad PPA.

Installation:

Open your sources.list and add the repository (this PPA is for dependencies):

$gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

And add the PPA at the end of the file:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kalon33/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/kalon33/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main

Change jaunty part with your ubuntu version (jaunty, karmic, intrepid etc) before saving the file.

Add the PPA key:

$sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys 0C48D1BF

Also add this PPA for Pidgin (Only Jaunty Package):

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/korin43/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/korin43/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main

Add the PPA key:

$sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys EDC35A97

Update your list:

$sudo apt-get update

Install Pidgin:

$sudo apt-get install pidgin

Video and Voice options are under Conversation window > Conversation > Media
